Established in 1888 by Gustav Heineman, a German immigrant, Heineman Winery thrived on the Lake Erie Islands, known for their quality grapes due to ideal soil conditions and a lengthy growing season. Despite the Prohibition's impact in 1919, Heineman's survived by selling grape juice and offering tours. Today, under the stewardship of the third, fourth, and fifth generations – Louis, Edward, and Dustin – the winery cultivates 50 acres of grapes, ensuring "vine to wine" quality control. South Bass grows Lubrusca grapes, primarily Concord and Catawba varieties, producing grape juices and popular wines like Pink Catawba. Additionally, Labrusca grapes like Ives, Delaware, and Niagara contribute to the island's diverse wine portfolio, featuring both Varietal and blended options like Sauterne and Burgundy, reflecting classical heritage.
